“Do as I say, not as I do…”
Over the past few months I’ve seen lots of posts on LinkedIn from recruiters advising job seekers on things like how to get noticed, how to write their CV and how to connect with (or respond to) recruiters.
Nothing wrong with any of that. Much of it has been well intentioned.
But, it begs the question…
Why aren’t recruiters following their own advice?
Because their job posts don’t stand out. Their InMails and emails probably don’t either.
Aren’t they being a bit hypocritical?
Recruiters tell candidates to do things like:
- Make their CV (or resume) stand out.
- Use the first half of their CV (or resume) to tell the reader why they might want to hire them.
- Not use corporate jargon.
But how many of them make their job posts stand out?
How many recruiters use the opening few paragraphs of these job posts to tell the target candidate why they might want the job?
How many recruiters have you seen using bullshit like this in their job posts;
“passionate about leveraging data to ensure the right decisions are made regarding the prioritisation of product backlogs, product roadmap definition and innovation”?
Is it possible that all these years, candidates have just been subconsciously mirroring what they’ve seen recruiters and hiring companies do?
